VT: Supporting Clean Water in Lake Champlain:
Lake Champlain is suffering from a phosphorus pollution crisis, which has caused toxic algae blooms the past few summers. After years of legal battles, the Environmental Protection Agency has required the state to commit to binding programs to dramatically reduce pollution from wastewater treatment plants, pavement, dirt roads and farms. Members of Toxics Action Center gathered at the Statehouse with members from a half-dozen other organizations to support meaningful and enforceable programs to improve the health of Lake Champlain and all of Vermont’s waterways. Members learned more about current legislation, lobbied their legislators about clean water, and made plans to share this information through letters to the editor or other local media. Group representatives also were able to network and learn more about other water issues around the state to complement their local campaigns.
