Toxics Action Center State Director

Toxics Action Center, a New England-wide not for profit public health and environmental organization, seeks a state director to be based in its Boston, MA, Hartford, CT, Concord, NH, or Providence, RI offices. The staff person will provide training, strategic assistance and will develop resources to support communities fighting toxic pollution.

At Toxics Action Center, we believe that everyone has the right to breathe clean air, drink clean water, and live in a healthy community. Our mission is to work side by side with New England residents to build strong groups to prevent and clean up toxics, while developing long-term leaders. Since 1987, Toxics Action Center has assisted more than 525 neighborhood groups working to prevent and clean up toxic pollution in their communities. Toxics Action Center provides organizing and strategic assistance to community groups working to clean up toxic waste sites, pressure companies to reduce the use of toxic chemicals, and stop the siting of unsafe waste, industrial, and energy facilities. Through our unique grassroots trainings; our network of hundreds of neighborhood activists and environmental experts; and our organizing conferences that annually attract more than 600 attendees throughout New England, Toxics Action Center works side-by-side with residents to protect our families and the environment from toxic chemicals and promote citizen leadership and empowerment.

Job Responsibilities
The state director will utilize Toxic Action Center's Neighborhood Assistance Program with residents and neighborhood groups to help them develop and implement effective strategies to solve local toxic pollution problems. The consultations guide groups through campaign planning; developing messages and materials; group building; fundraising; working with the media; lobbying; researching and writing reports; managing interns; and wining at public hearings. Staff will work side-by-side with these groups through additional meetings and correspondence. The state director will also raise the funds to support these campaigns. Specifically the staff person will do:
  • Community Organizing. Utilizing Toxics Action Center's Neighborhood Assistance Program with 6-8 community groups a year to assist them in developing and implementing effect strategies to solve local toxic pollution problems. Conducting 25 consultations on campaign planning; developing messages and materials; group building; fundraising; working with the media; lobbying; and wining at public hearings.
  • Cultivating Donors. Developing annual fundraising plans with target goals to meet for organizational and project budgets. I dentifying and cultivating new members to support Toxics Action Center's work. Meeting with major donors of the organization.
  • Grant Seeking & Writing. Researching grant opportunities, writing proposals and cultivating relationships with past, current or prospective funders. Writing articles for Toxics Action Center's annual report and newsletters.
  • Event Planning. Assisting in organizing an annual conference and issue summits for activists across the state. Holding house parties to cultivate new members for Toxics Action Center. Participating in presenting "Dirty Dozen" awards to 12 egregious polluters in the region.

Qualifications
Previous organizing experience; management and fundraising experience a plus. Sense of humor, flexible and able to work in a fast-paced environment. Desire to be part of a dynamic team. Articulate, detail-oriented, and able to tell a story. Strategic, personable, and able to work with a wide range of people.

Salary and Benefits
