Toxics Action Center Development Associate  

At Toxics Action Center, we believe that everyone has a right to breathe clean air, drink clean water, and live in a safe and healthy community. Since 1987, Toxics Action Center has assisted more than 550 communities working to prevent and clean up toxic pollution. We provide organizing and strategic assistance to community groups working to clean up toxic waste sites, pressure companies to reduce the use of toxic chemicals, and stop the siting of unsafe waste, industrial, and energy facilities. Through our unique grassroots trainings; our network of hundreds of neighborhood activists and environmental experts; and our organizing conferences that annually attract more than 600 attendees throughout New Engl and, Toxics Action Center works side-by-side with residents to protect our families and the environment from toxic chemicals and promote citizen leadership and empowerment.

The Development Associate will play a lead role garnering grassroots membership and major gifts. In 2001, 90% of Toxics Action Center’s income came from foundations. Since then, we have created a vibrant major gifts and membership program, which has grown to cover 45% of our budget. The Development Associate is overseen by the Executive Director, and is responsible for managing Toxics Action Center’s major gifts program, membership fundraising and implementing creative fundraising activities around Toxics Action Center’s annual conferences.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Existing & New Major Donors: Identify and meet with donors, excelling in personal fundraising. Participate in three staff-wide major donor drives & orchestrate at least three personal major donor drives.
  • Cultivation: Cultivate Toxics Action Center’s current major donors. Maintain cultivation and membership update schedule, and send opportunistic news articles to donors as Toxics Action Center celebrates victories, holds important events, etc.
  • Training: Consult with local citizens’ groups and non-profits to assist in developing their major donor programs through Toxics Action Center’s annual conferences and group workshops.
  • Record-Keeping: Maintain donors’ and members’ records in both Toxics Action Center’s membership services database and internal database, updating each regularly throughout the year.
  • Membership: Organize and participate in staff canvass and prospecting mailings, bottomlining creation of materials for these membership efforts. Coordinate efforts to renew and prospect members via telephone, mail, and canvass.
  • Events: Assist fellow staff in organizing house parties to cultivate new donors for Toxics Action Center. Participate in fundraising components of conferences, including a membership pitch, matching gifts and recruiting silent auction prizes.
  • Organizational Materials: Coordinate the creation of Toxics Action Center’s annual report, newsletters, brochures, letterhead and other materials.

Qualifications :

    • Commitment to social change, environmental health and citizen empowerment.
    • At least one year of previous fundraising experience; including face-to-face fundraising.
    • Sense of humor, flexible and able to work in a fast paced environment.
    • Desire to be part of a dynamic, motivated team.
    • Proven ability to reach and exceed goals.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Detail oriented, strong administrative skills, able to meet deadlines.
    • Understanding and ease with Microsoft Excel and database applications.
